Cuba is a Caribbean island, only 105 miles south of Key West, Florida, with sugar-white beaches and is dotted with tobacco fields, which play a part in the production of the country’s legendary cigars. The capital, Havana, is lined with pastel houses, 1950s-era cars and Spanish-colonial architecture in the 16th-century core, Old Havana. We hosted our 2017 Annual King Dunston Getaway group trip to Cuba organized by DiasporaES. The group of 20 stayed at an Airbnb 8-bedroom luxury villa in Havana. We enjoyed exploring Havana on cultural tours of Old Havana and the surrounding areas. We visited sites including the Havana Rum Museum, Muraleando Community Art Project, Casa Museo de Africa, Finca Vigía Hemingway’s home in Cuba, Sábado de La Rumba at El Palenque and Callejón de Hamel. We also learned the basics of Casino (Cuban style “salsa”) from professional dance instructors, spent the day at the beach and enjoyed delicious Cuban cuisine.
