Taiwan is a small island nation 180 km east of China with modern cities, traditional Chinese temples, hot springs resorts and dramatic mountainous terrain. Taipei, the country’s capital in the north, is known for its busy night markets, Chinese Imperial art at the National Palace Museum and Taipei 101, a 509 m-tall, bamboo-shaped skyscraper with an observation deck.
We visited Taiwan in December 2016 on a long 12-hr layover on their way to New Zealand. We spent the day exploring Taipei. The airport had free morning and afternoon tours from the airport. We participated in the morning cultural tour and visited the Shou Sin Fang Creativity Wagashi and Cultural Center and Sanxia and Zushi Temple. In the afternoon we took the bus back to the city to visit Taipei 101.
